You've got the qualifications, you've got the CV and now you've got what you wanted - an interview. And that's where the real test starts. No matter how good you look on paper, it is you in person that will ultimately be judged by the employer and there is no hiding place from that. The worst things that can happen are the trick question or the unexpected test, but even these can be anticipated to some degree, say employment specialists. If you know what a prospective employer is looking for before you go into an interview you should be able to tailor your answers accordingly.

Research is always the key to an interview which will not leave you looking silly. If you find out as much as is possible about the company, the job and, even more importantly, the company's clients, it will be easier to deal with whatever comes along. Sources for company information are even easier to access now that any organisation worth working for has a website.

The other part of being prepared is to research yourself - because that is what the interviewer will be doing with you. It is good to have a strategy to sell your strong points. So, job hunters should write down a "benefit" next to each part of their CV before attending the interview and plan to talk about how that is relevant to the job. As well as being prepared, you need to be positive about the company or organisation, and about yourself.

These are the personality and skills part of the interview, but your stunning character will count for nothing if you fail to observe the basics. First impressions count, so be punctual and polite and dress appropriately. And you have your body language to consider. Poor body language creates an immediate barrier so it is a good idea to lean forward slightly to show interest in what the interviewer is saying. You should avoid unnecessary gestures and don't let your gaze wander. And last impressions count as well. Don't forget those final moments when you will be asked if you have any questions. It's good to ask about the timing of promotion and training opportunities and show that you expect the company to play its part.

  1. A good CV is much more important than a personal interview.

  2. You can prepare even for unexpected tasks before the job interview.

  3. It is a good idea to research some facts about the company where you would like to work.

  4. Company website can’t provide appropriate information.

  5. You should be prepared to explain how your strengths are connected with the job you want to get.

  6. The way you look is important for the first interview.

  7. You shouldn’t ask any questions at a job interview.

The chief executive of HSBC bank caused uproar recently when he said he would rather use call centre workers in India than those in Britain. He claimed that workers in Asia are smartly dressed, enthusiastic, more efficient and are often graduates. Of course, we shouldn’t forget that wages in India are about £4 a day, which is more like the hourly rate in Britain.

The bank already has 3,100 call centre staff in Asia answering calls from British customers, and it expects to increase that to 4,500 by the end of the year. With wages so low, the additional cost of redirecting phone calls to India is not a problem. And HSBC isn't the only company to be looking East. British Airways, Zurich Insurance, GE and others have all sent their call centre services overseas.

The public service workers' union, UNISON, is concerned by recent trend to export call centre services in an attempt to reduce overall costs. It can lead to cutting a considerable amount of jobs in the UK and call centres remain a major employer in Britain. One job in 50 in Britain is currently in a call centre, which is expected to rise to one in 30 in the next five or six years.

In India, however, call centre work is seen as highly desirable. With school teachers earning just £50 a month, call centre wages of double that are seen as attractive. This means that the industry attracts the young, well-educated, middle classes who are eager to work in a clean and modern environment. It is not easy to get that job. Many applicants pay £200 for a three-week training course on British culture, they are also taught how to 'neutralize' their accents to suit a British audience and some adopt English names.

Callers from Britain need never know that the young woman on the other end of the line is in Delhi not London. It is estimated that 100,000 people work in the call centre industry in India and some think that could grow tenfold over the coming years.

  1. The chief executive of HSBC bank prefers Indian workers because they are more hard-working and better-educated.

  2. Many companies have already sent their call centre services abroad.

  3. British trade unions are worried because jobs are exported from the country.

  4. Very few people in Britain work in call centres.

  5. Call centre workers are paid more than teachers in India.

  6. No special training is needed to get a job in a call centre.

  7. British companies tell their customers that their calls are answered by Indian operators.

Lawrence Summers, president of Harvard University, suggests in the latest Harvard Business Review that the American research university, for example, Harvard, might be a model for the company of the future. He does not mean that firms should set up their own 'universities' - although plenty, from Motorola to McDonald's, have done that. Instead, they should adopt the research university's fluid and decentralized approach to creativity and hierarchy. "If you look at the organisations in the economy where the greatest value is being added," argues Mr Summers, "they are increasingly the organisations that share the values and character of universities."

Certainly, there are aspects of the university that firms might envy. They are, to start with, extraordinarily durable institutions. Mr Summers' own Harvard, founded in 1636, is very young compared with the University of Bologna, founded in 1088, or Paris and Oxford born less than a century later.

They are all hugely successful: there are far more of them, and far more students, than ever before. In the rich world alone, 39m people are now taking a university course of one sort or another. And they teach more subjects than ever before. Anyone tempted to mock McDonald's Hamburger University should look at the classes in food technology and catering that plenty of modern universities now provide.

The successful university has other characteristics that firms increasingly aspire to. For example it gathers, under a single powerful brand, individuals contracted to supply it with their intelligence.

Moreover, the deals struck by the most successful academics when they transfer from one university (often European) to another (usually American) are becoming more lucrative, with all sorts of perks regarded as normal.

But there is one big difference that Mr Summers does not mention. Universities everywhere are largely state-financed. Harvard's students may pay for their teaching, but the university's research, which Mr Summers urges firms to copy, is subsidized with public money. Public support gives most universities a financial stability that companies do not enjoy. Sure, companies succeed on the back of big ideas, but on the whole it is their application that makes money. To put a good idea effectively and profitably into practice generally requires managerial experience and authority. That is why clever 25-year-old graduates rarely run durably successful companies, even if they are from Harvard.

  1. Some companies have organized their own universities.

  2. Successful modern companies are getting more and more like universities.

  3. Universities may envy certain aspects of company’s life.

  4. Companies are more durable than universities.

  5. Popularity of universities is growing in the modern world.

  6. University research is normally not funded by the state.

  7. An inexperienced graduate can seldom manage a project successfully.
